NSU Speech and Debate Team brings home top honors
(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) -- The Northeastern State University competitive speech and debate team participated in its first tournament of the school year, the 2017 Storm Classic in Durant on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
NSU won seven awards the first day of the tournament, hosted by Southeastern State University, along with placing second in the Top Three Oklahoma Schools within the tournament. Gemini Creason, a senior from Tahlequah, won first place as a Pentathlon competitor, first in Informative Speaking, second in After Dinner Speaking and Persuasion, and third in Communication Analysis and Program of Oral Interpretation. Johanna Avila, a freshman from Tulsa, placed seventh in Prose.
Overall, NSU placed fifth out of 19 schools.
The NSU team won six awards the second day of the tournament, which was hosted by Cameron State University. Creason placed first in Informative Speaking, After Dinner Speaking, and Pentathlon; second in Program of Oral Interpretation, and third in Communication Analysis. Earin Murrell, a freshman from Tulsa, place third in Poetry.
NSU placed first in the Top Three Oklahoma Schools Saturday and placed fourth overall out of 17 schools. The next competition will be at Carl Albert State University in Poteau where NSU will co-host.
